Types of command
There are two types of command in the Indian Air Force.
Operational Command
The duty of a operational is to conduct military operations using aircrafts within its area of responsibility. Currently there are 5 operational commands.
Functional Command
The duty of a functional is to maintain combact readiness to support military operations. Currently there are 2 functional command ( Training & Maintenance ).
• Every command is headed by " Air Officer Commanding-In-Chief " who is " Air Marshal " rank officer.
Let's explore Operational & Functional commands one by one.
Central Air Command
CAC was formed on 19 March 1962, at Rani Kuthee, Calcutta. In 1966 it was relocated to Allahbad ( Prayagraj ) UP.
• Motto : Nigrahya Rasava shastrava
• HQ : Allahbad ( Prayagraj ), Uttar Pradesh.
• Air Bases : kushinagar, Agra, Gwalior, Prayagraj, Barely, Maharajpur.
• Role : Air Defence, OCA, Offensive Ground Support, Airlift
• Other Units : Nagpur, Kanpur, Varanasi, Bihta, Darbhanga, Nainital,
• Aircrafts : Su30mki, Jaguar, Mirage-2000, IL76, DO228, MI17, MI26, Avro etc.
• Air Officer Commanding-in-Chief : Air Marshal Richard John Duckworth, AVSM, VSM
Southern Western Air Command
SWAC was formed on 25 July 1980, at Jodhpur. In 1998 it was relocated to Gandhinagar, Gujrat.
• Motto :nJai Shree Varte Veeramh.
• HQ : Gandhinagar, Gujrat.
• Airbases : Bhuj , Jaisalmer, Naliya, Jamnaga, Jodhpur, Pune, Barmar.
• Forward airbases : Ahmedabad, Nal, Suratgarh.
• Role : Air Defence, Maritime strike role.
• Aircrafts : Su30mki, MIG21, HAL Chetak, MI8, MI29, Jaguars, IL76MD, Avro, MI35.
• Air Officer Commanding-in-chief : Air Marshal Sandeep Singh, AVSM, VM.
Western Air Command
WAC was formed in 1947 as No.1 operational group. On 22 July 1949 No.1 operation was re designed as operational command. In 1963 it was re located to New Delhi. It is largest & most important operational air command.
• Motto : Akasha Pasmatsoma
• HQ : Subroto Park, New Delhi .
• Airbases : Adampur, Ambala, Avantipur, Chandigarh, Halwara, Hindon, Leh, Srinagar, Pathankot, Palampur, ( There are some Advance Landing Grounds )
• Forward Airbases : Amritsar, Sirsa, Siachen, Bhatinda, Sarsava, Udhampur
• Role : Air Defence, OCA, Offensive Ground Support, Civilian Relief.
• Aircrafts : Avro, D0228, Boeing Apache, MIG21, Jaguars, MIG29, Dassault Rafale, Su30mki, IL76, AN32, MI26, Chinook, HAL Cheetah, HAL Dhruv, MI17,
• Air Officer Commanding-in-Chief : Air Marshal Balabhadra Radha Krishna, AVSM

Eastern Air Command
EAC was formed on 27 May 1958, at Rani Kuthee, Calcutta. Named as " No. 1 operational group ". In 1963 it was relocated to Shilong, Meghalaya.
• Motto : Samareshu Parakramah
• HQ : Shilong, Meghalaya.
•Airbases :Chabua, Guwahati, Bagdogra, Barrackpore, Hasimara, Jorhat, Kalaikunda.
•Forward Airbses : Agartala, Kolkata, Panagarh, Shilong.
• Role : Air Defence, OCA, Offensive Ground Support, Civilian Relief.
• Aircrafts : Su30mki, Mig27 , MI8, AN32, HAL Dhruv, MI17, Avro, HAL Chetak, C130J.
• Air Officer Commanding-in-Chief : Air Marshal Amit Dev, AVSM, VSM
Southern Air Command
SAC was formed on 19 July 1984, at Thiruvananthapuram. & it is relatively newest air command.
• Motto : Antariksham Prashasmahe
• HQ : Thiruvananthapuram, Kerla.
• Airbases : Sulur, Tanjavar, Car Nicobar,
• Role : Air Defence, Maritime strike role.
• Aircrafts : Su30mki, HAL Tejas, AN32, MI8, MI17, Jaguars.
• Air Officer Commanding-in-Chief : Air Marshal Manavendra Singh, AVSM, VRC, VSM
Maintenance Command
MC was raised in 1950 as Maintenance Group at Chakeri, Kanpur. On 26 January it was re located to Nagpur, Maharashtra as Maintenance Command.
• Motto : Sarvada Gagane Charetu
• HQ : Nagpur, Maharashtra.
• Role : Support other commands
• Base Repair Depots : 1 Base Repair Depot Kanpur-Chakeri, 2 Base Repair Depot Gwalior-Maharajpur,
3 Base Repair Depot Chandigarh, 4 Base Repair Depot Kanpur-Chakeri, 5 Base Repair Depot Coimbatore-Sulur, 7 Base Repair Depot Tughlakabad- New Delhi, 9 Base Repair Depot Pune, 11 Base Repair Depot Ojhar, 18 Base Repair Depot Jodhpur,
• Air Officer Commanding-in-Chief : Air Marshal Shashiker Choudhary VSM
Training Command
TC was formed on 22 July 1949 at Bangalore Karnataka, TC is responsible for Flying & Ground training of Air warriors.
• Motto : Tamasoma Jyotirgamaya
• HQ : Bangalore, Karnataka.
• Schools : Navigation Training School at Begumpet Air Force Station, Hyderabad. Basic Flying Training School and the Air Force Administrative College. HAWK operational training command & Weapon system operators school are located at Bidar Air Force Station.
• Aircrafts : BAE HS, HAWK mk 132, PilatusPC7, Kiran Mk2
