The National Security Guard (NSG) is an elite counter-terrorism unit which come under Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA).
The motto of the NSG is "Sarvatra Sarvottam Suraksha".That is why it completes the operation with the objective of "Never Give Up".
It was founded on 22 September 1986 under the National Security Guard Act, 1986, The NSG was established in the wake of 1984 Operation Blue Star, and the high collateral damage to Golden Temple, and civilian and military collateral casualties.
The primary reason for its conception was to combat terrorist activities with a view to protect states against internal disturbances.The NSG was modelled on the pattern of the SAS of the UK and GSG-9 of the Germany.
NSG commandos are divided into two groups - the Special Action Group (SAG) and the Special Rangers Group (SRG)
The SAG comprises of 54% of the force and is the elite, offensive wing that has members drawn from the Indian Army. The SRG has members on deputation from central police organizations like the Central Armed Police Forces and State police forces.
The NSG comprises of a total personnel strength of 14,500.
NSG are also know as black cat
This is because of their black coloured drill cotton coveralls and the black cat insignia on their uniform
