What is the Integrated Test Range?

Integrated Test Range (ITR) means a none populated area where the Military of a country conducts its Missile Tests. India's Integrated Test Range; Dr. Abdul Kalam island and Chandipur.

Dr. Abdul Kalam island, also known as Wheeler Island. It is an island off Odisha, India. On 4 Sep 2015, the island was renamed in honor of the late India President Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam. Approximately 150 km east of the state capital Bhubaneswar. The island is located in the Bay of Bengal 10 km off the eastern coast of India and about 70 km south of Chandipur in the Balasore District.

The Indian Govt. began searching for a location for Dedicated Military Missile Test Range. In 1986, the Central Govt. announced plans to construct a National Test Range at Balopal in Balasore district, the same district as Chandipur. For that Central Govt,. moved 130K people out of 130 villages.

The missile testing facility is composed of 2 complexes - Launch Complex-IV ( LC-IV ) located on Abdul Kalam island and Launch Complex-III ( LC-III ) located at Chandipur. Integrated Test Range, a well-equipped Test & Evaluation (T&E) center of DRDO, is set up to provide safe and reliable launch services for performance evaluation of Rocket, missiles, and airborne weapons. Various different performance Range instrument systems such as Electro-Optical Tracking, Radar System, Telemetry System, and Central Computer System are deployed for the real time necessary data.

Indias most of the missiles tested successfully at Abdul Kalam island; Akash, Agni, Astra, Brahmos, Nirbhay, Prahar, Prithvi, Shaurya, Advanced Air Defence (AAD), Prithvi Air Defence and recently ASTA Missile. Access to the test facility is by Ship, as there is no bridge or airport but, there is a small helipad. All supplies and equipment arrive there by Ship.
