Organization structure of Indian Army 

Indian Army is the land based arm and the largest component of Indian Armed Forces, with 1.23 million active troops, 9.60 lac reserve personnels and almost 296 manned aircraft. Indian Army stands to be 4th largest Army in the world.

Army Headquarter

Indian Army headquarters located in south block, New Delhi.Chief of Army Staff ( officers of rank General ) assisted by six officers ( officer of ranks Lt Gen ) preside in Army Hq. 

Commands 

The Army operates seven commands, out of which six commands are operational and one training command. Each command is headed by General Officer Commanding-in-Chief officer of rank Lieutenant General. Each command directly reports to the Army Headquarter.

Operational Commands

Central Command - Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh 
Southern Command - Pune, Maharashtra 
Western Command - Chandimandir, Haryana 
South Western Command - Jaipur, Rajasthan 
Easter Command - Kolkata, West Bengal 
Northen Command - Udhampur, Jammu and Kashmir 

Training Command 

Army Training Command - Shimla, Himachal Pradesh 

Corps 

The Indian Army has has 14 corps, each commanded by General Officer Commanding ( also known as GOC ) officers of rank Lieutenant General. Each corps consists of three to four divisions. The corps HQ is the highest field formation in the army.

Division 

The Indian Army has has 40 divisions, each commanded by Division Commanding ( also known as DC ) officers of rank Major General. Including four RAPIDs (Re-organised Army Plains Infantry Division), 18 Infantry Divisions, 12 Mountain Divisions, three Armoured Divisions and three Artillery Divisions. Each division consists of three to four brigades. 

Brigades 

The Indian Army has five Independent Armoured Brigades, 15 Independent Artillery Brigades, seven Independent Infantry Brigades, one Independent Parachute Brigade, three Independent Air Defence Brigades, two Independent Air Defence Groups and four Independent Engineer Brigades, each commanded by Brigade Commander officers of rank Brigadier. Each corps consists of three to four divisions. An infantry Brigade consists of 3 to 4 infantry battalions with some supporting elements. Brigades operates directly under corps. 

Infantry Battalion

Battalion is main fighting unit of Indian Army, commanded by Battalion Commanding Officer ( also known as CO ) officer of rank Colonel. Battalion consists of four companies and one Ghatak Platoon. 

Company

Company consists of three platoons commanded by Company Commander, officer of ranks lieutenant colonel or major. 

Platoons 

Platoon consists of three sections commanded by Section Commander who Junior Commissioned Officer ( JCO ) of rank Subhedar Major. 

Battery

Consists of 3 to 4 sections, mainly in Artillery and Air Defence units. Every battery has two officers, senior one is battery Commander 

Sections 

Section is smallest component of the Indian Army consists of ten soldiers commanded by Section Commander of rank Havaldar. 



Arms and Services in the army

There are two categories in army Combat Arms and Services.

Combat arms further divided into Infantry Regiments and Combat Corps. 

Infantry Regiments 

Infantry regiments are main and frontline fighting force of the Indian Army. It also provides battalions and well trained personnels to field. Most regiments were raised by British Army and they are still serving in the Indian army, some regiments raised after independence. There are total twenty-nine infantry regiments in the Indian Army.
