AKs and their variants used by Indian Military and CAPF

The AK and its derivatives entered Indian Army service during the IPKF's deployment in Sri Lanka Since then vast quantities of AK rifles have been purchased and recovered from terrorists and now some of them are being manufactured in India. Many of these captured weapons were ironic, made in Russian factories like Izhmash and Tula.

 1. Pistol Mitralieră model 63&90 Aka Romanian Ak.

Ministry of Defence signed a contract with Romania for 100,000 rifles in June 1995 and for ammunition in December 1996 and the Rashtriya Rifles continued to use Romanian AKs for Anti-terror ops.

2. Chinese Type-56-1.

Thousands of Kalashnikovs were seized from separatists in Kashmir and Punjab, and Type 56 was one of them. It was pressed into official service in the valley and NE.

3. East German AK 'MPI KMs 72'(side folding variant) and MPI KM-72(fixed stock variant, very few in service).
One of the best AKMs apart from the Ak-103 in service.

inquiries were made for potentially ordering 10 million East German AK rifles, but nothing came as result, probably due to the collapse of East Germany.

4. Arsenal AR and it's variants

(AR-M1,AR-M1F,AR-M1F1,AR-M1F41,AR-M5F41) AR-M1 has a fixed stock AR-M1F,AR-M1F1 have under folding stock,AR-M1F41 and AR-M5F41 have side folding stock. AR-M5F41 has a Picatinny rail on the dust cover handguard.

in pic:- M1F41 with FAB kit modification and AR-M5F41(right)

Heavily used by Paramilitary forces and State Police, some quantities are used by Army as well. Till 2014 the MAH had bought over 100,000 Bulgarian-made Arsenal Aks,39,000 in 2018, and a few more procurements were done in past
An effort to acquire 64,000 Rifles for the army failed in 2002–03 when negotiations with a Bulgarian firm ended due to Russian demands for licensing control over the deal and the order according to some articles that the deal was replaced with 29,000 Aks purchase from the Russian Federation in 2010 but I haven't seen any Russian origin Ak used by armed forces, IA has few Russian made Akms Under-folding stock variants but they are captured from dead terrorist.

5. Trichy aka 'TAR'

A clone of Arsenal M1F41 manufactured by OFB, it has a rain upper handguard, a different pistol grip, high rate of fire of around 800 rpm, side and foldable stock.

The name 'Trichy' is derived from its manufacturer, the OFB plant in Tiruchirappalli in Tamil Nadu. More than 30,000 have been produced and delivered to various CAPF and state police.

6. Ak-103

Marine Commandos of the Indian Navy aka Marcos were the first to use the AK-103 rifles in India.
In 2021 signed an agreement to buy 70,000 AK-103 with some modifications (like a new dust cover with rail, and a different muzzle,) assault rifles from Russia as part of an emergency procurement.

7. Hungarian AK-63D

Hungarian oak was the first which entered the service. it was acquired from Directly Hungary( A/c to some old article, i have no data on procurements)

Now it's Very rarely seen, some of them are recovered from horrified terrorists and then inducted into service.

8. OFB made Ghatak

Manufactured by Rifle Factory Ishapore, it's a clone of East German Ak.it is Available in fixed butt and bottom folding butt versions have quad rails on the handguards. Mostly used by paramilitary and state police.
